My journey.
Ever since I learned iris photography was a genre of photography, I immediately became obsessed! What an intimate and deeply connecting form of photography. Every eye so beautiful and unique just as each of us as humans are a whole unique world full of memories and beliefs and hopes and dreams and each of us bring our own form of talents and personalities into the world. I really resonated with what a beautiful art form this was and instantly knew it was something I had to do.
I came across Iris photography on September 9th of 2024, when we saw a local photographer offering them at the Utah State Fair. I paid for a session for my wife and I to have this done and told her how amazing it would be to have our eyes documented, so that after we are no longer walking this mortal realm, our kids could still peer into our souls and feel closer to us. I knew I had found my passion and my calling.
I went home that night and have spent every waking moment researching and learning this new adventure, ordered a macro lens and some macro lights and shot my first few irises of my kids when my packages arrived about a week later and then had a couple friends come and do some sessions.
Did those first couple sessions out of my garage and knew that I couldn't bring clients there because holy ghetto!
I officially launched my website, converted one of my homes small bedrooms into an iris studio and opened my doors for business on September 19th, 2024 doing sessions now out of my home in Layton Utah
I have goals of someday becoming busy enough and bringing in enough income that I am able to start renting a commercial space outside of the home.
I truly am passionate and love doing this form of photography and connecting with amazing humans as I capture their irises in my studio.

How does it all work? Tips for a smooth session...
Here's a little more info on how the session works.
I have an optometrist chin rest where I will have you rest your chin and brace your forehead to eliminate movement as movement will affect the very fine line of focus and cause motion blur, so sitting still is essential.
Once you are comfortable in the chin rest, I use a combination of either bright but comfortable constant led lights that I will use to light each side of your iris, both constricting your pupil to give us more surface and details to capture, while also allowing my camera to get a fast enough exposure to keep the details sharp.
For those that struggle with the LED lights, I have a flash option where I use a different LED light that will be shined towards your iris to help me lock in focus and constrict the pupil after which a flash strobe will do short durations of light for the camera exposure.
Both options allow me to capture the detail I need, but above and beyond the lighting options, one of the most key factors to getting the best possible details and quality of your final image, is the ability to open your eyelids wide enough unassisted using just your facial muscles.
I highly recommend practicing in front of a mirror to prepare for your iris session, you want to practice opening your eyelids up wide enough to get good exposure all around your iris, top and bottom, the more of your iris you are able to expose for your session, the better the outcome of your final edit. Practice doing a surprised face like you just found out some crazy tea or surprising news, really work on trying to raise the eyebrow to the top of your forehead so we get the top of your eyelids to come say hello. Then practice using your cheek and lip muscles to pull your bottom lid down to your chin and see if you can get the bottom of your iris to show fully.
Hopefully these tips and tricks help you get a better idea of how much iris you will be able to expose unassisted. Don't worry, if you struggle I have a few other tools and tricks that we will use during your session.
Overall the session only takes 5-10 minutes per eye max depending on how much iris you are able to expose, the more you are able to show off that amazing iris, the less time and quicker your session will be.
If you have any questions or concerns about doing an iris session, feel free to reach out and I'd be happy to talk more and answer them.
The Process

01. The Session
Step 1 of the process is your session. The session is fairly quick (5-10 mins per eye) and involves taking several images of your iris, lighting it from each side of the iris using a led light or a flash. Many have compared it to an eye exam.
~5 to 10 minutes per iris

02. Editing
After your session, I begin the editing and design process. This involves combining your multiple images into one with a little photoshop love. I offer a variety of upgraded artistic designs to make your iris stand out but all sessions include basic black
1-14 days max

03. Products
The funnest part is ordering amazing products that showcase your iris artwork, everything from metal prints, custom iris necklaces, bracelets, Christmas ornaments etc. Don't let your beautiful eye sit in the cloud, show it off loud and proud!
